    Oil in the North Sea!
Bishop Eric Pontoppidan of Bergen made the surprising claim that the North Sea might contain oil in "The Natural History of Norway", published in 1752. He wrote: "The Fat of the North Sea is besides its Saltnesse a remarkable Characteristic...It is probable, that here and there in the Sea like as on Earth, runne Oil-Brookes or Streams of Petroleo, Naphta, Brimestone, Pittecoal Fat and other bituminous and oleaginous Juices."
